Fine lines, wrinkles, and crow feet give away your age, no matter how young you feel. Sometimes, damage from the sun and other lifestyle choices make you look even older than you are. Surgery is a solution, but it comes with risks. At Kingwood Urgent Care, serving Kingwood, TX and the surrounding region, we offer a treatment known as platelet rich plasma (PRP) that utilizes your own blood to correct skin imperfections.
Definition of PRP
Platelet-rich plasma consists of blood that’s highly concentrated with proteins that you need for your blood to clot. Plus, your body requires them for healing. Additionally, the components of these proteins assist with cellular growth.
Basically, blood rich in platelets repair damaged tissue in addition to promoting the growth of healthy cells while encouraging healing. Researchers believe the high concentration of growth factors injected into a particular area stimulates the tissue to heal quicker. For wrinkles, the PRP stimulates the body to produce collagen, then you’re body naturally tries to fill in these lines over time. Most commonly, we utilize PRP for the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines on your cheeks and forehead as well as repairing crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, and frown lines.
What to Expect During a PRP Treatment
The first part of your treatment process will consist of our practitioner evaluating your medical history. At this point, our practitioner will also analyze the area where you want to have PRP. We’ll discuss with you any concerns and collaboratively determine an appropriate course of action.
Next, we’ll draw blood from your arm, just as we would if you were having blood work performed. Your blood will go to our laboratory where it’s spun through a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other components of your blood. Usually, this only takes about 15 minutes. Finally, we have a solution consisting of plasma and a higher concentration of platelets than standard blood.
We then apply a local anesthetic, so you don’t feel discomfort during the injection. Next, we inject the platelets into your body.
What to Expect After PRP
Although every patient responds a bit differently, you may have some mild discomfort at the injection site. Most patients can resume normal-day activities after their appointment and can return to work the following day. You may notice redness and irritation. You’ll need to avoid overly using skincare products, but you can still use a moisturizer while you have irritation. You may even apply a light coating of foundation to cover up any redness. You’ll want to avoid the sun and vigorous exercise as much as possible while you’re recovering – usually for about the first 72 hours. We’ll advise you on other precautions you can take, too.
Results to Expect from PRP
Every patient is different but most see results in about two to three weeks following the procedure. At this point, you’ll have fewer and less pronounced wrinkles and fine lines. Plus, your skin will look smoother. The results may last a year or longer. After a year, you can receive another treatment.
Possible Side Effects of PRP
Soreness, bruising, redness, or skin discoloration around the injection site are possible. Infection can happen, but we take all the necessary precautions to reduce your risk. While it’s uncommon, a person may have an allergic reaction to their own serum. An individual could develop a blood clot, but we take the necessary precautions to prevent this from occurring as much as possible.
